Since the worldwide ivory ban in 1989, the poaching of elephants for their ivory has started to halt. However, large quantities of ivory are still finding their way to illegal markets in Africa and beyond. Elephants are also killed for their meat and hides. On top of that, they are facing a long-term threat of habitat reduction because of expanding human populations.
